The year 2025 is not that far away.
With such a plethora of commercial real estate coming appearing in today’s commercial, young mechanics are coming out of the woodwork to be part of this unique wave in the automotive world. These same newest crops of auto mechanics is going to find that mechanics shop of the future will need to include with some sophisticated computer adaptions. Gone will be torquing wrenches, turning screws, fastening or replacing bushings and while eyeballing the performance of Weber carburetors. Even as we move into the future, electric cars will take the handle on what will this newest movement.
The new shops first line of issues will be “how to maintain future cars that will require access to on-board computers, have full 3d visual models of auto issues, lots of useful graphics that clearly show optimized performance. Complex on-board computers such as GPS for self driven cars, self diagnoses for cars and even self repair will come standard in every car. Therefore tools and repair will be much different then what is in today’s shop. It is industry standards that the industrial designers of the future will have a keen eye on how repairs are expected to be made. More than likely, it might be plug and play where entire sections of a repair of a car might be sealed containers, to be snapped into place. Instead of replacing brakes, for example, the entire and older brake system, would snap out only to be quickly replace where a new one would be snapped into place. They also might think how a garage be adapted to handle such a repair. Auto lifts will not necessarily raise a car to access the bottom, but might need to clamp a car and access it from other locations by rolling it on its sides or back. The may not be a need for high ceilings to dissipate carbon monoxide from a running engine, but rather a “cooler environmental clean room” to remove and replace circuit boards. Current global economy affect large automobile manufactures in terms of taking large stakes in manufacturing of cars at a head spinning pace. Eventually older automobiles will be phased from mainstream. Regular body and mechanic shops will all need to adapt to keep up with the changes. We will see less engine hoists, less oil changing facilities, more transmission stations, and many more electrical, electro magnetic, computer requirements. Does such a change how a garage might affect how fire suppression will work in a shop space? Since too, no longer with there fuel and that oil uses will change, certain needs of air conditioning requirements will change. A shop might review how its lighting requirements better offer task lighting to help with redefined repairs. It is almost certain that floor access requirements will be needed including ways to isolate repairs based on ability to provide replacements, changing ways labor is calculated.
2025, not that far away.
So in terms of thinking what a mechanics shop of the future might look like.. say around 2030 when the market expectations of over 500,000,000 of these future cars take the streets? I have already seen a few Teslas for sale.
I keep thinking about how Porsche has already developed a very powerful all electric coupe. What would a state of the arts mechanics look like.
Brainstorming… i came up with the following key items.
– Super clean floors, no oil, no gasoline spills. Acid resistant decking materials. Possibly glass or ceramic infused 24″ square tiles with tight mortar joints.
– A hoist that not only lifts a car, but could tilt it up sideways and on either end. This would be done quickly adjust the numerous GPS calibration systems in the car.
– Massive downloading computer systems that would plug into any car’s internal brain, adjusting, downloading and uploading
– Ergonomic seating robots that would be altered to move and shape seats for occupants that own the car.
– HID and laser lights for fiber optics
– transmission
– recharge and eco deposit areas
– flash rom chip
